A “diamond-shaped living room” is very common in Hong Kong which helps with the general privacy. However, it can be a daunting experience for designers/ flat owners to place furniture effectively. This project we did is a classic diamond-shaped living room located in Lam Tin, Hong Kong.
Typically, the sofa will be placed adjacent to the entrance wall, and the TV will be placed in the opposite inclined wall which results in watching TV with an awkward angle, or to install a triangular shape TV cabinet in order to help aligning the TV to a comfortable angle. Both options are not ideal in order to solve the problems.
Hence, we decided to do it differently by swapping the TV and the sofa, then adding a full height shoe cabinet with timer strips partition. Apart from creating a functional entrance foyer, but the cabinet can also become a straight wall for placing a normal TV cabinet. Now the living room looks almost rectangular. With the sofa next to the window, our clients can now sit back and relax while viewing the magnificent sea view.
The kitchen was originally a bit small and dark; we opened up the kitchen and added an island-like built-in cabinet which extends the kitchen both visually and physically. An oven can be installed into the built-in cabinet, along with a space for placing the kitchen bin.
We do not wish to further crowding the kitchen, thus we decided to move the wall between master bedroom and bathroom, to release more bathroom space for placing a washing machine and a dryer.
In terms of materials, we went for a yellowish wood colour to create a warm and relaxing tone. The walls were kept off-white, to create a bright, clean but intimate vibe for the space.
